Evelyn A. “Effie” Borosky, of Simpson died Sunday morning at Marian Community hospital, Carbondale.

Born on May 16, 1937; in Richmondale, and resided all of her life in Simpson. She was the daughter of the late Leo & Mary Reposh Borosky. 

She was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers and Guild. She was also a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality, which she served as mentor until her illness. Evelyn’s first love was her church, she and members of the Sodality decorated the church for Holy Days.

She was a committeewoman for Cub Scout Pack #17 and Boy Scout Troop #312, of Simpson where she served as treasurer for many years.

Before retirement, she was employed by the Banner Shoe Co., Honesdale and later by the E. J. Shoe Co. of Forest City until its closing.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Forest City Nursing Home and Marian Community Hospital for their care and compassion shown to Evelyn during her illness.
Her caregivers were her sister: Marie Graytock and her niece: Toni Graytock.

She is survived by two brothers and their wives: Leo and Margaret, Gautier, Miss; Melvin and Judith, Crystal Lake Forest; two sisters: Marie Graytock, Simpson; and Geraldine and her husband John F. Maher, Jr; Somers, CT.; nine nieces, seven nephews, twelve great nieces and seven great nephews, an uncle Andrew Reposh and his wife Mary, Jessup and an aunt Erma Repash, Forest City.

She was preceded in death by a brother-in –law: Andrew M. Graytock, Sr. and a niece
Monica Borosky.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St, Simpson with Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Michael’s Church, 46 Midland St, Simpson to be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph Sitko, Pastor. Interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery.  Friends may call Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Marian Community Hospital or St. Michael’s Church. Those attending the funeral are asked to proceed directly to church on Wednesday.

John R. Rogowski, 61, of Honesdale died Thursday night at Mercy Hospital Hospice Unit.  His wife and best friend for 25 years is the former Ann Marie Scalese.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late John and Anna Burnett Rogowski.
John had been employed by the former R.C.A. Corp., Dunmore. He enjoyed living in the country, riding his A.T.V., hunting, fishing and spending time with his dog, Luther. He was a past president of the Grattan Singer Hose Co., Simpson.

He is also survived by a son: Michael John Rogowski, Tucson, ARZ; two daughters:
Christine Travis and Melissa Riggie both of Punxsutawney; a step son Christopher Karosus, Carbondale and a step daughter Kelly Cook, Simpson, six grandchildren:
Adam, Shawna, Lakyn, Sara, Samantha, Devon.

A Memorial service for family and close friends will be held Saturday, December 22nd

Joseph Evancho, 80, of Carbondale died Sunday at the Marian Community hospital, Carbondale.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late Charles & Anna Karol Evancho. He was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He received an accounting degree from NYU.

Throughout his life Joseph taught accounting and record keeping at Flushing and Bayside High Schools in New York and was a New Jersey Tax Examiner and retired from the Department of Labor.

 He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, Simpson and was a member of the Neuman and Ledger Clubs.

He is survived by a sister: Vera Evancho Smith, Masquiet, NV; fourteen nieces & nephews; including Christine Korsun, Piscataway, NJ & Robert Evancho, Carbondale, twenty-six great nieces and nephews and 11 great great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by six brothers: George, John, Wasil, Michael, Stephen and Andrew and three sisters: Helen Caporaso, Ann Streit and Marie Evancho.

A private visitation and service will be held from the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St., Simpson with services by the Rev. Edward Levandusky, Pastor of SS Peter & Paul Church. Interment in the parish cemetery.

Wendell A. “Jim” Grosvenor, 91, of Greenfield Township died Thursday at the Carbondale Nursing Home.

Born November 28, 1916, in Carbondale; he was the son of the late Earl & Mabel Goodrich Grosvenor.  Jim spent most of his life in Greenfield Township. He attended Greenfield Township High School and he was in the first graduating class of Montdale High School in 1936.

He had served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and a short stay in the Army. He had been employed in the shipyards in Wilmington, Delaware and held several other jobs in his lifetime. He was the oldest member of the Finch Hill Baptist Church, but recently attended the Community Bible Church, Jermyn Rd.

He was a very compassionate, caring person to all who knew him.

He is survived by two sisters: Lenore, Honolulu, HI; and Clara Gardner, Greenfield Township. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Niles E. and Vernon “Tuz” Grosvenor.

Visitation and Interment in Scott Valley Cemetery, Montdale were private. A Memorial Service by Rev. Jay Best of the Community Bible Church will be held at a later date.

Marie Agusta Van Nort, 76, of Carbondale died Thursday at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale.  She was the widow of Robert J. Van Nort, who died in 2001.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late John & Isadore Vail Goodwin.
She was a 1948 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. She was a homemaker and in early years had been employed by General Textile Mill, Carbondale.

She had attended the Berean Baptist church and she enjoyed painting, gardening and bingo. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be deeply missed.

She is survived by six children: Robert J. Van Nort, Jr  Webster, MA; Gail M. Ednock,
Brenda L. Becker, Lynn M. Van Nort & Beth A. Rowan, all of Carbondale, Debra Kurilla, Hatfield, Pa; a sister: Joan Horner, West Creek, NJ, 12 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother: John “Jack” Goodwin and a sister: Elizabeth Goodwin.

Private visitation and funeral services were conducted from the Oliver R Shifler Funeral Home, Inc   62 North Main St., Carbondale with services by the Rev. John McCarty, Pastor of the Clifford Baptist Church. Interment in Sand Banks Cemetery, Greenfield Township.

Stanley J. “Junie” Rupp, 53, of Whites Crossing, Carbondale Township died Sunday at
Hospice Community Care, Dunmore.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Stanley J. and Anna Mae Bedrin Rupp.
He was a 1973 graduate of Fell High School, Simpson and a 1982 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, as a technology instructor.

He was employed for 23 years as a technology instructor for the Scranton School District
and was also employed as a deputy by the Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Department.

He had attended Holy Trinity Church, Simpson and was a member of the Technology Education Association of Pennsylvania, Scranton Teachers Education Association.
He enjoyed skiing and carpentry.

He is survived by two sons: Kyle and his companion Stephanie Dolinak, Whites Crossing; Corey, Greenfield Township, a brother: Geary and his wife Linda Rupp, Whites Crossing; two sisters: Dianne and her husband John Molinaro, Carbondale
Kim Rupp, Whites Crossing, a granddaughter: Donnica Reese and a great niece:
Reese Dyan Collura, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Andrew M. Graytock, Sr, 76 of Simpson died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. His wife of 54 years is the former Marie Borosky.

Born in Richmondale, he was the son of the late John & Veronica Galuska Graytock. He was a graduate of Fell High School.

Andy devoted much of his life to the military retiring with 32 years of service from the Department of the Army and the United States Army Reserve with 43 years of service (1948-1991). He retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3rd Grade. His tours of duty included: Army of Occupation, Germany Constabulary Force, Korean War, Honduras and the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Graytock’s service awards include: Overseas Ribbon for Occupation of Germany, Good Conduct Medal, Army Achievement Medal with clusters, Army Commendation Medal with clusters, NCO Professional Development Medal, Army Reserve Medal with eight clusters, Army Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon, Southwest Asia Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with clusters, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Army Forces Reserve Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Saudi Arabian Government Commissioned Desert Storm Campaign Ribbon and Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal.

He was a member of the Lion’s Club for twenty years, 13 years as a charter member of the former Simpson Lion’s Club. There he served as president for four years, member of the Board of Directors, Secretary-Treasurer, Lioness Liaison, Zone Chairman, Regional Chairman, Lieutenant Governor (1992-1993) and Past District Governor (1993-1994). He is also recipient of the highest award in Lionism- The Melvin Jones Fellow Award (1994), Lion Distinguished service award and the Lion 100% award. He is presently a member of the Blakely- Peckville Lions.

He served as Civil Defense Director for Fell Township for 15 years for has held several
Offices in the Grattan Singer Hose Co. #1 of Simpson including Fire Chief for eight years and Assistant Chief for ten years. He is a member of the State Fire Chief’s Association and a honorary member of the State Sheriff’s Association.
He is a former Carbondale Area School Director and former member of the Fell Township Planning Commission.

Andy is a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson and the Holy Name Society; A life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Paciga Post #4712, and a life member of the American Legion, both of Simpson. He was currently serving as a Fell Township Supervisor and Road Master.

He is also survived by a son: Andrew M., Jr and his wife Antoinette, Carbondale;
Two daughters: Andrea M. Graytock and Dr. Kathleen M. Graytock both of Westerville, Ohio and a granddaughter: Laura Ann Graytock, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: John, Joseph and Michael Graytock and four sisters: Mary Graytock Borosky, Ann Bullet, Margaret Fox and Susan Hull.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc  621 Main St, Simpson with Mass at 11:00 AM in St. Michael’s Church to be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph S. Sitko. Joseph Emmett, Jr of Simpson died Monday night at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.His wife is the former Joan M. Cavage. The couple had celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in March.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Joseph & Martha Muta Emmett, Sr.
He attended Fell High School, Simpson. He served with the Air Force and the Pennsylvania National Guard. He had been employed through the years by Hendrick Manufacturing Co, Carbondale and D. &. F. Johnson Motors, Carbondale and Pompey Motors and Clifford Motors, Clifford.

He was a member of S.S. Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, Simpson and the Holy Name society. He was a former member of the Grattan Singer Hose Co. and the Carbondale Knights of Columbus.

Joe was a wine maker enthusiast and also enjoyed repairing and collecting vintage lamps. He was fond of his cat “cutie-pie”.

He is also survived by three sons: Joseph and his wife Tammy, Carbondale, James, Simpson, Ralph, Carbondale; three daughters: Deborah and her husband Burton Hardy, Cresco; Beverly Curtis and her companion Michael Laguzzi, Simpson; Karen and her husband Ralph Obelinas, Throop; two sisters: Marion Emmett, Simpson; Delores and her husband John Petruzella, Berwick; eight grandchildren: Renee and her husband Joseph Fetcko, Tony Curtis, Michele and Craig Obelinas, Deanna Imperiale, Cassondra and Kate Sue James and Kayla Emmett; aunt, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pauline Fedak, 76, formerly of Simpson died Sunday at the Carbondale Nursing Home.
She was the widow of Joseph Fedak, who died in 2005.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Stephan & Mary Mikloiche Lavranchuk. She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and
completed classes for Licensed Practical Nursing in Scranton. She had been employed prior to retirement by the Carbondale General Hospital.

She was a member of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, Midland St., Simpson.

She is survived by a brother: Stephen and his wife Ann Marie Lavranchuk, Syracuse, NY; a sister: Dorothy and her husband Joseph Kilker, Narrowsburg, NY; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother: Theodore.

Peter  Deamon, 76, of Carbondale died Saturday at home. His wife is the former
Rita Michalak. The couple had been married for 54 years.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Stephen & Christine Stanko Deamon.
He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and was an Army veteran.  He had retired from Cross Engineering, Carbondale.

He was a member of S.S. Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, Simpson.

Peter is also survived by two sisters: Julia Paulus, Phoneix, AZ. And  Ann Warhola, Longmont, CO., nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Mary Krenitsky.

Ruth M. Emmons, 78, of Carbondale died Monday at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.   Her husband is Eugene J. Emmons.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Mark & Jesse Swingle.
She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and was a homemaker. She was a member of Berean Baptist church, Carbondale.

Also surviving is a son Steven and his wife Arvis Emmons, Gainesville, Ga;
nieces and nephews.

A gravesite service was held Wednesday in the Myers Cemetery, Herrick Center by
the Rev. Dale E. Pepper, pastor of the Berean Baptist Church.

Leonard  P.  Mroczka

Leonard  P.  Mroczka, 83, of Simpson died Sunday at Carbondale Nursing Home.
His wife is the former Antoinette Wallace. The couple had celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in June.

Born in Mayfield, he was the son of the late Michael & Anna Roman Mroczka.
He was a graduate of Mayfield High School and completed further studies in Industrial
Engineering from Rutgers University, New Jersey.  He was an army veteran of World War II.

He had retired as an engineer for Gentex Corp., Simpson. He was a member of St. Michael’s Church & Holy Name Society, Simpson. Leonard was a devoted family name.
He enjoyed bingo, gardening, carpentry and was an avid Giants and Yankee fan.

The family would like to thank the staff of Carbondale Nursing Home and Ascera Care Hospice for their care and support.

He is also survived by a son Richard L. and his wife Nancy Mroczka, Carbondale;
A brother Michael and his wife Marian Mroczka, Mayfield; two sisters: Eleanor Mroczka, Mayfield and Ceil Kohrman, Ohio,three grandchildren Richard A and his wife Jackie Mroczka, Nicole and husband Jason Rosar and Michele Mroczka, two great grandchildren Vanessa and Noah Mroczka, nieces and nephews.

Delores “ Dolly” Fedorchak, 69, of Simpson died Tuesday at Community Medical Center, Scranton.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Anthony & Kathryn Lutchko Fedorchak. She was a 1955 graduate of Fell High School, Simpson and completed
Registred nurse training at Scranton State General Hospital. She was Directress of
Nursing at Carbondale General Hospital and retired as Directress of Nursing at Mid Valley Hospital, Peckville.

She was a member of S.S. Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, Simpson.

She is survived by a sister Marge and her husband Robert Thornton, Simpson;
nine nieces and nephews: James and Jennifer Thornton, Laura and Tim Norella,
Lisa and Joseph Trichilo, Leslie and Charles Mazza, Jeremy and Mary Fedorchak,
Tony Wisniewski, Joseph Wisniewski, Ann Rose and James Salak, Debra and Kevin Scott, great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers: Basil and Myron.

Michael J. Wilcha, 49, of Carbondale died Monday at Mercy Hospital.
His wife is the former Sharon A. Regal. The couple had celebrated their 28th
wedding anniversary on September 1st.

Born in Carbondale, he is the son of Evelyn Vojack Augustinsky and step son
of Cyril Augustinsky, Carbondale and son of the late Eugene Wilcha.

He was a graduate of Carbondale Area High School, Lackawanna County
Vo-Tech program and attended Johnson School, Scranton. He had been employed by
Global Metal Forms, Scranton and most recently Gentex Corp., Simpson prior to his illness.

Michael was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson. He enjoyed motorcycle
and snowmobile racing and was a fan of local stockcar racing and the Philadelphia Eagles. His dog “Chloe” brought him special comfort.

He is also survived by a son: Michael Jr. and a daughter: Brittany, both at home;
A brother: John, Jermyn, several nieces and nephews.

Sergeant Major (Ret.) Michael J. Borosky, 67, of Jermyn and formerly of Carbondale died Monday in the Hospice Unit of Mercy Hospital.  His wife is the former Judith A. Morrison. The couple had celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary of March 3rd.

Born in Richmondale; he was the son of the late Edward & Mary Graytock Borosky.
He was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson and had been employed prior to retirement by the RCA/ Thompson Electronics, Dunmore. He also served with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard units in Carbondale, Scranton, Honesdale and retired
from headquarters company in Harrisburg.

Mike was a member of St. Michael’s Parish, Simpson where he served as collector and
was a member of the Slovak Carolers’. He was a member of the former Simpson softball
team and enjoyed golf, bowling and following NASCAR and the Yankee’s.

He idolized his grandchildren and will be deeply missed by his family.

He is also survived by four daughters: Christine and her husband James Grecco, Clifford;
Ann Marie Meo, Olyphant; Nicoletta and her husband Jason Cook, San Diego, Calf,;
Cindy Meo, Jermyn; two brothers and their wives: Edward “Jim” & June Borosky
and John & Mary Borosky, all of Simpson; two sisters and their husbands: Mary & Donald Sweder, Bellville, NJ; Diane & Michael Boguski, Simpson; two granddaughters:
Maria & Marissa Grecco, nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Anthony.

Steve Babich, 81, of Union Dale died Saturday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton.

Born in Union Dale, he was the son of the late Harry & Mary Lutchko Babich.
He was a retired farmer. He was a member of St. Basil’s Orthodox Church of America,
Lord Ave., Simpson.

He is survived by two brothers: Walter, Union Dale, Theodore, Clifton, NJ; nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers: Thomas, Nicholas, Peter, Samuel, Harry, Basil, John & George and three sisters: Esther Keklak, Mary Gunza, Barbara Repella.

Rose Rycerz, 95, of Scotland, Pa died Monday at Penn hill Nursing Center,
Chambersburg.  Her husband Frank Rycerz , died in 1981.

Born in Whites Crossing, Carbondale Twp; she was the daughter of the late
Andro & Mary Remijas Novobilski.  She had resided most of her life in Philadelphia
and had been employed for 45 years by Linton’s Lunch, Philadelphia.

She is survived by a daughter: Dr. Rose Ann Rycerz-Fiskett and her husband Philip,
Scotland; a brother: Edward Jackovitz, Bel Air, Md; a sister: Theresa Stralkowska, Boiling Springs, PA; nieces and nephews.

James E. Morrison, 70, of Carbondale died Monday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late James A. & Doris Denny Morrison.

Stella  L.  Whitelavich
September 28, 2007

Stella L. Whitelavich, 91, formerly of Froble St., Simpson died Friday at the Carbondale Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Joseph Whitelavich, Sr., who died in 1979.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Martin & Elizabeth Virbitsky Stungis.
She had been employed prior to retirement by several Carbondale area dress factories.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale and was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 4712, Simpson. Stella enjoyed the many years she spent at Spruce Lake.  The family would like to thank the staff of the Carbondale Nursing Home for their wonderful care.

She is survived by two sons: Joseph and William and his wife Frances Whitelavich,
both of Simpson, a daughter Lorraine and her husband John Delfino, Carbondale;
four grandchildren and their spouses: Jack & Patty Delfino, Lisa and Mark Borosky,
Christel & Glenn Hallock and Gary Whitelavich; four great grandchildren: Jack Delfino,Jr; Cody Delfino, Jason Borosky and Gavin Hallock, nieces and nephews.

Clair  Munley
September 23, 2007

Clair Munley,87, of Carbondale died Sunday after an illness. His wife is the former
Anna Moffitt. The couple would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Sept. 26th.

Born in Archbald, he was the son of the late Edward & Martha Keifer Munley.
He served his country as a sergeant in the Marine Corp during World War II, in the Pacific Theatre Operations. He was very proud of being a Marine and wore his Marine Mantle with pride throughout his life. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church,
Marine Corp League, Mitchell Hose Co. and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was very proud of his Irish heritage and looked forward each year to the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

He was employed by National standard Co., Carbondale prior to retirement.

Clair enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and gardening and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. He took great joy when the Sox won the World Series in 2004.

Clair was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be sorely missed by his entire family.

He is also survived by two sons: Wayne and his wife Norita, Kevin and his wife Patricia,
A daughter Karen Dragwa, two brothers Edward & Paul and a sister Betty Quinn, eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son: Joseph, a brother: Eugene and three sisters: Helen Matichak, Ruth Tomaine and Judy Krahl.

Joseph M. Bevacqua, 71, of Simpson died Sunday at home. His wife, the former Mary Ann Gallick died in 2004.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Anthony & Margaret Neutts Bevacqua.
He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. He was an Air Force Veteran of the Korean War. Prior to his disability he was employed by Triangle Pacific Co. Carbondale.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Parish, Simpson and in his earlier years enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing and collecting baseball and Philadelphia Phyllies & Eagles sports memorabilia.  He was very proud of his grandchildren and took pride in their individual accomplishments.

The family would like to thank Joe’s friends for their help and support over the past several years, especially Carlo Spizzirri.

He is survived by three sons: Joseph R. and his wife Jo Ann; and Mark and his wife Janice, both of Lenoxville; Scott, Simpson; a daughter: Sandra and her husband Alex
Bazink, Simpson; six grandchildren: Mark, Jeffrey & Morgan Bevacqua and Malina, Alex and Seth Bazink, nieces & nephews.

Ruth A Repella, 62 of Archbald died Thursday at Abington Manor Healthcare Center, Chinchilla.  She was the wife of Thomas Repella, the couple had been married for 38 years.

Born in Eynon, she was the daughter of the late Enrico & Sophie Petrosky Angradi.

She had been employed by Leno Enterprises, Jermyn before her retirement.
She was a member of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, Simpson.

Ruth enjoyed bowling, crafts and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, who will be deeply missed. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.

She is also survived by two daughters: Christine and her husband John Chandler, Simpson and Deborah Repella, Phillipsburg, NJ; a brother Enrico Angradi, Delran, NJ;

Justine Hurchik, 93 , of Farmington Hills, Michigan died Thursday at home.
She was the widow of Michael T. Hurchik, who died in 1992.

Born in Simpson; she was the daughter of the late Panteleimon & Melania Kawecka
Tarris. She was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by three daughters: Vera Hurchik; Eileen and her husband Joseph Fremont and Nancy and her husband Anthony Munaco, all of Michigan; six grandchildren: Lynne, Kristin, Jonathan, Anthony, Catherine and Anna, nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers: Theodore, Daniel, Gregory & Demetrius;
five sisters: Martha Deiamovich, Beatrice Kowalskie , Anna Ridgik, Mary & Julia Tarris.

Marian  S.  Maxwell

Marian S. Maxwell, 88, died Thursday at the Kutztown Manor. She was the widow of
Dr. D. Deane Maxwell, who died in 1992.

She was born in Philadelphia, daughter of the late John H. & Ida E. Davis Stoddard.
She was a 1936 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. She had been employed through the years by J.C. Penney Co., Hess Department Store and Penn Furniture Co. as an interior designer.

Marian resided most of her life in Carbondale and Crystal Lake. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Triple M Club and the United Methodist Women. She was a former member of the Carbondale News Club, past member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, all of Carbondale.

She was a former Brownie Troop leader, Den Mother for the Boy Scouts and was active in the P.T.A.

 

She is survived by two sons: Kent and his wife Kim Maxwell, RD Forest City; Dean and his wife Karla Maxwell, Farmersbranch, TX; a daughter: Lynne and husband Roy Hoch, Kutztown; a brother: Edwin E. Stoddard, RD Carbondale; three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother: Robert and a grandson Eric Moyer.

She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, Simpson.
Gloria was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, who will be missed.

Robert  Lewis, 85, of Rochester, NY died Tuesday in Rochester General Hospital.

Born in Carbondale; he was the son of the late Horace J. & Frances Skerrt Lewis.
He was educated in Carbondale. He retired from the Xerox Company, Rochester.

Robert enjoyed golfing into his later years.

He is survived by two sisters: Gwendolyn Owens, Allentown and Hazel Lloyd, Bellevue, WA; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Elwin and William and three sisters: Dorcy Lewis, Frances Zukas and Clarissa Johnson.

Interment was in Canaan Corners Cemetery, Waymart.

James Beveridge Jr., 77, of Dunellen, NJ and Elk Lake (Wayne Co.), PA
died  Wednesday at home. His wife the former Betty B. Bensen, died in 1990.

Born in Kearny, NJ; he was the son of the late James & Elizabeth Currie Beveridge, Sr. He was a graduate of Kearny High School and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired as general manager for the Wayne Steel Co., Elizabeth, NJ.

He was a member of the Bound Brook United Methodist Church, Sommerville Elks Club # 1068 where he was Elk of the Year 1974, American Legion Post # 119, Dunellen, Two Hundred Club of Union County as a life member and former past president; all of New Jersey.

He loved being with his family and enjoyed hosting parties for his family and friends.

Surviving are a son Jeffery and his wife Judy Beveridge, Waymart; a daughter Cynthia and her husband Brian Kuzner, Dunellen; a brother William, Florida; a sister: Elizabeth Fitzsimmons, Hazlet, NJ; nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Metro & Irene Ksnenich Scuba. She was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson and was employed prior to retirement by Gentex Corp., Simpson.

She was a member of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church , Simpson.

She is survived by two brothers: Alexis, Clarks Summit; Michael, Mayfield; two sisters: Olga & Nancy Scuba, Carbondale.

She was preceded in death by four sisters: Mary Wilson, Julia & Helene Scuba and Delores Bock.

Joseph M. Yanchek, 88, of Jermyn, formerly of Simpson died unexpectedly Friday, In Mid- Valley, Hospital.  His wife the former Justine Orinick Yanchek, died  May 21, 2003.

Born in Carbondale on Jan. 19,1919, son of the late Andrew & Mary Drob Yanchek. He attended Fell township High School and was employed by the Simpson Coal Company. He was an Army veteran of WWII.  He worked in the Carbondale Mine fire Project as a heavy equipment operator and retired from Gentex.

He was a member of SS Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, Simpson  and a former member of the Fell Township Golden Age Club.

Joe was a devoted father and grandfather who adored his grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Yanchek, with whom he resided and Diane and her husband Ed Zindell, both of Jermyn; two grandchildren Kristyn Maikranz,& Kyle Zindell, several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John & Steve Yanchek and Andrew Yanchek who died in infancy; and two sisters, Cecelia Yamialkowski and Mary Rusnak.

Evan J. “Bud” Griffiths, 85, of Carbondale died Saturday at home. His wife the former Dorothy Evans died in 1990.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Richard & Anna Lester Griffiths. He was an Army veteran of WW II.  He retired as a manager for the J.J. Newberry Co. working in Carbondale, Forest City, Olyphant and Clarks Summit.

Bud enjoyed wood working and fishing and was a former member of the Triple M Club of the Carbondale United Methodist Church. He was also a scoutmaster for Troop # 333, Carbondale and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by a son: John, Carbondale; three daughters: Gleny’s and her husband David “Rocky” Edwards, Waymart; Cheryl Hunter, Waymart; Kimberly and her husband Dave Nichols, Jermyn; A brother Lester and his wife Nancy Griffiths, Uniondale and a sister Eleanor Griffiths, Clifford, a loving campanion Dorothy Barney and her family, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Barbara A. Tarhanich

Barbara A. Tarhanich, 85, of Simpson, died Tuesday at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Meholic Tarhanich. Before retirement, she was employed as a seamstress in the garment industry in the Carbondale area. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Simpson.

Surviving are a son, Joseph Tarhanich, Scotrun; a sister, Vera Wasnack, Simpson; two grandchildren, Lisa Conniff, Jessup; and Michael Tarhanich, Florida; a great-grandaughter, Brianna Conniff, Jessup; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Mary "Mamie" Tarhanich, Anna Horhutz, Kathryn Peskowski, Elizabeth Tarhanich and Rose Zurine; and four brothers, Thomas, Joseph, John and Michael.

John Dudas

John Dudas, 83, of Simpson died at home.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late Joseph & Eva Zelinski Dudas.
He was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. He operated Adams Printing, Simpson for many years.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson; the Holy Name Society and was a active in many church functions including as a collector and church picnics. He was Judge of Elections in Fell Township 3rd District and was a member of the Golden Age Club of Simpson. 

John was known for helping many people in town and could often be seen on his daily trips to Carbondale.

He is survived by three brothers: Joseph, Danbury, Ct; Stanley, Egg Harbor, NJ; Dominic, Simpson, several nieces and nephews.

Walter Stawisky

Walter Stawisky, 80, of Easton died Saturday at Lehigh Valley Hospital- Muhlenberg Center, Bethlehem.  His wife, the former Mollie Lewsley died in 1995.

Born in Mayfield, he was the son of the late Joseph & Mary Fegal Stawisky. He was a 1945 graduate of Mayfield High School and the Lackawanna vocational Training School. He was a Navy veteran of WWII.  He retired from the Bethlehem Steel Corporation as a foreman for the “saucon & bull gang.”

He was a member of Citizens Hose Co. and the Order of the Fleas Inc both of Easton. He also helped with the equipment for the Chessman Drum & Bugle Corp of Easton.

He is survived by two daughters and their husbands Susan & Peter Rosetti, Allentown; Nancy & James Schaffer, Easton; a sister: Lillian Brownell, Carbondale; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Deloros Adams.

PA.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Dr. Adam J. & Rita Yanchick Tomsykoski.  He was a graduate of Fell High School, Carbondale Area District and received a bachelors degree in business and computer science. He was employed for a short time as a manager trainee at Ames Department Store, Carbondale before his illness.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson. AJ ran track for Carbondale Area and was noted for his record in the 100 yard dash.

He is survived by a sister: Donna Kanlikowski, Moss, TN; a stepmother Malgorzata Tomsykoski and two step sisters: Malgorzata & Magdalene Tomsykoski, 5 nephews & cousins, all of Simpson.

He was preceded in death by a brother John and a sister: Diane.

Judith E. Hoffman- Fleming

Judith E. Hoffman-Fleming, 61, of Carbondale died Tuesday at the Lackawanna County Health Care Center.

Born in Danville, PA; she was the daughter of the late Dr. John E. & Heilda L. Haynes Hoffman.  She was a graduate of San Gabriel Academy and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree  from Loma Linda University. She had been employed as a judiciary for the Unemployment Compensation Bureau for the state of California. She also taught high school for ten years. She returned to Pennsylvania 20 years ago.

She was a member of St. Basil the Great Orthodox Church, Lord Ave, Simpson. Judy always sought to see the good in people.

She is survived by a daughter: Katherine Joy Fleming and her husband Justin Godey, Emeryville, CA.

The funeral will be Friday with a Requiem Service at 2:00 Pm  in St. Basil’s Orthodox Church, by the Rev. Michael Demko, Pastor. Interment in St. Tikhon’s Cemetery, South Canaan.

Nancy Isabell Myers

Nancy I. Myers, 83 of Carbondale died Sunday at the Lackawanna County Healthcare Center, Peckville.  She was the widow of James T. Myers, who died in 1984.

Born September 12, 1923 in Lexington, MA; she was the daughter of the late John Henry & Alice Jenkinson Stanley.  She was employed during WWII at the Office of the Washington Navy Yards, she then worked for General Textile and retired from Sugerman’s, Eynon.

She was a member of the Carbondale First United Methodist Church and was an active member. She was steward of the flowers & candles, was a Sunday School Teacher and member of the quilters and food pantry.

She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by five children: Kuth Krok & husband, Robert, Carbondale; Esther Ogozaly, Jacksonville, NC; Sarah Gibbons & husband Patrick, Magnolia, NJ; Thomas Myers & wife, Laura, Carbondale and Mark Myers & wife, Judy, Carbondale; ten grandchildren: Brian Henshaw, Laura Ogozaly, Beverly Daniels, Diane Marsico, Frank Ogozaly, Jennifer Myers, Shawn Owen, Jamie Owen, John Myers, Heather Myers, five great grandchildren: Ashley Daniels, Kristen & Samantha Marsico, Justin & Brianna Owen, nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son: John R. Myers in 1991, a brother: Herman Stanley, Three sisters: Bessie Suskey, Marion Hollway and Alice Stanley.

The funeral will be Thursday with services at 10:30 AM in the Carbondale First United Methodist Church, Church Street by the Rev. Barbara Snyder, Pastor. Interment in Indian Orchard Cemetery, Honesdale.

Rose Onukiavage, 72, of Carbondale died Wednesday night at home. She was the wife of Joseph Onuiavage, Sr. The couple had been married for 50 years.

Born in Jessup, she was the daughter of the late Peter & Mary Borosky Siarkievicz. She was a homemaker. Rose enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.

Also surviving are a son Joseph and his wife Marie Onukiavage, Archbald; two daughters: Patty Fitch, Wilkes- Barre, Maryann Onukiavage, Carbondale; A sister Mary Ann Baldwin, Bacliff, Texas; six grandchildren, one great granddaughter.

Anna  Pytel  Bednarz, 92, of Simpson died Monday at Osprey ridge Healthcare Center, Carbondale.  She was the widow of Charles Bednarz, who died in 1964.

Born in Whites Crossing, Carbondale Township; she was the daughter of the late Andrew & Antonina Fedor Pytel. She was a homemaker.

Anna will especially be remembered for her love of quilting. Expressing her love and creating a legacy with the countless hours of hand stitched quilts for family members.

She is survived by four sons: Charles Jr., Pennsylvania; Robert, Starruca, Pa;  Anthony and his wife Margaret, Deposit, NY; Andrew and his wife Carol, Jackson, PA; three daughters: Evelyn Delimon, Lincoln Park, NJ; Marion Trumper, Jackson, Pa; Shirley Trumper, Deposit, Ny; two daughter in laws: Linda, Morristown, NJ; Mary, Boonton, NJ; 27 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, nieces & nephews.

Kathryn R. Stungis, of Simpson, PA died Saturday afternoon At Marian ommunity Hospital, Carbondale. She was the widow of Edmund S. Stungis, who died in 1987.

Born in Whites Crossing, Carbondale Township, PA; she was the daughter of the late John & Mary Plevyiak Tarchack. She was employed in her early years in several Carbondale area dress factories. She moved to Simpson two years ago after spending much of her life in Rockaway, New Jersey area.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Simpson. Kathryn was known for her crocheting and enjoyed cooking and baking.

She is survived by a son Edmund and his wife Lillian Stungis, Simpson; A son in law: Michael Bahnatka, Rockaway, NJ; a brother: Edward Tarchack, Whites Crossing; two sisters: Sophie Garguilio and Nellie Gallinot both of Mine Hill, NJ; two granddaughters and their husbands: Linda & Charles Silvestri and Maryann & Lt. Col. Anthony Davit; two great granddaughters: Katy & Emily Davit, nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter: Eleanor Bahnatka; three brothers: John, Joseph and Frank and three sisters: Anna Sczeczh, Mary Loyack and Helen Bianco: a deceased grandson, Michael Bahnatka.

William J. Schermerhorn, 71, of Carbondale died Saturday night at home.His wife is the former Mary Evanionka. The couple had celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary in November.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Willard & Marguerite Carpenter Schermerhorn. He was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. He was an Army veteran who was stationed in Germany.

He owned and operated Schermerhorn Radio- TV Repair in Carbondale established in 1955. In later years, prior to his illness, he was employed by the Pioneer American Bank, Carbondale.

He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who adored his grandchildren. Billenjoyed model trains and riding his moped.

He is also survived by three daughters: Jill and her husband Greg Linko, Jessup;Amy Schermerhorn, Carbondale and Laura Wilcox, Cape Coral, FL;four grandchildren Sarah Linko; Zachariah, Bethany & Lyndsay Grace; two nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Francis.

Joseph T. Drob, 79, of Simpson died Monday at home.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late John B. & Johanna Stefanides Drob. He attended Fell High School, Simpson and was a Navy veteran serving in both WWII and Korea.

He was employed before retirement by Building Service Co., New York City as a doorman. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Simpson.

Joseph was a generous, thoughtful and always willing to give a helping hand. He will be missed greatly and remembered fondly.

He is survived by eight nieces & nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Thomas, Stephen and John Drob and a sister: Sophie Hannivig-Burgio.

Michael A GorelMichael A. Gorel, 85, of Whites Crossing, Carbondale Township; died Sunday afternoon at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale. His wife is the former Bernadine Lapka.  The couple had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary May of 2006.

Born in Whites Crossing, he was the son of the late Michael & Catherine Danko Gorel. He attended Robert Morris School, Whites Crossing.  He was a disabled Army veteran serving in WWII in the Normandy invasion. He retired as a foreman for the Wright Finishing Co., Monticello, NY.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Simpson. Michael was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family.

Also surviving are two sons: Michael F. and Edward J., both at home; two daughters: Theresa Comunale, Jermyn RD and Rose Eskandari, Alexandria, VA; two sisters: Veronica Martines, Carbondale, Ann Wengrin, Bellville, NJ; four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: John, Andrew and Joseph and three sisters: Mary Russell, Kathryn Falong, Rose Lutchko.

Earl M ParryEarl Matthew Parry, 91, formerly of Carbondale died Sunday evening at the Forest City Nursing Center.  His first wife, the former Charlott Doney, died in 1981; his second wife is the former Ethel Crocker Robinson.

Born in Dupont, he was the son of the late William J. & Stella Nash Parry. He was a 1934 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. He retired from the Hendrick Manufacturing Co., Carbondale after 41 years of service.

Earl resided most of his life in Carbondale and was a member of the Berean Baptist Church, Board of Directors of the Berean Baptist Church and the Berean Baptist Builders.

He is additionally surviving are a son: Edward Parry, Frederick, MD; a daughter: Sharon Fife, Childs, a step son Bailey Robinson, Riverside, R.I.; step daughter: Bonnie Thomas, St. Wales, Fl; two sisters: Jean Koch, Pennsylvania, Alberta Maxwell, Phoneix, AZ.; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren, 10 step great grandchildren, nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary Ellen Mitchell, Dorothy Hollis &
two grandchildren.

Marie Elaine BoshmanMarie  Elaine Boshman, 59, of Carbondale died Sunday night at Mercy Hospital Hospice Unit.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Joseph & Pauline Serafin Boshman. She was a graduate of St. Rose High School and was employed by P & M Associates, Childs.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. She was a kind person who cared for many family members over the years.  She enjoyed rose gardening, trips to Disney World and was a fan of “Dancing with the Stars”. Marie fought a brave and courageous battle with cancer.

She is survived by a sister Celeste and her husband Andrew Yakubik, Carbondale; A brother: Joseph Boshman, Carbondale; a nephew Matthew Yakubik; two aunts and cousins.

A  Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 North Church St., Carbondale by the Rev. William Campbell, Senior Priest. Interment Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.

Joseph E. Wasnock, 87, of Simpson died Thursday evening at Carbondale Nursing Home.

Born in  Simpson, he was the daughter of the late Lawrence & Sophie Roskoski Wasnock.  He attended Fell Township Schools and was a Army Veteran of WWII where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Bronze Arrowhead. He was in campaigns in central Europe, Normandy, Southern France and the Rhineland.
 
Joe was employed by the Gentex Corp., Simpson and retired with over 30 years of service.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Church and its Holy Name Society; Paciga Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4712; Grattan Singer Hose Co and the Fell Township Golden Age Seniors, all of Simpson.

He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards and trips to Atlantic City. He will be missed by his family.

He is survived by a sister: Helen V. Rydzik and her husband Paul, Simpson; A brother Leonard Wasnock and his wife Maryann, Port Charlotte, Fla.; Nieces & Nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Lawrence, Edward and Valentine.

Marian Kolcun

Marian KolcunMarian Kolcun, 83, of Simpson  died Wednesday afternoon at Moses Taylor Hospital while battling a staph infection.  She was the wife of Michael Kolcun, who died in 2003.

Born July 16, 1923; in Forest City, she was the daughter of the late George 7 Mary Benarick Strus. She was a graduate of Forest City High School and retired from the garment industry after a career of working in the shipping department of Crystal Lake Sportswear.  She was a member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, Forest City.

Marian had a strong will to live, she demonstrated her fortitude daily as she encountered a variety of health challenges.  She survived breast cancer in mid life, but later struggled with lymphoma, diabetes, and heart problems.  Through all, she remained a kind and gentle soul who loved her family, while pursuing a passion for baking and cooking.

Surviving are a son: Dr. Michael, Huston, Texas; a daughter: Marian Jean, Simpson; two sisters: Dorothy Babich, Simpson and Joyce Spenard, Forest City; two brothers: George Strus, Forest City & Thomas Strus, New Holland; three grandchildren, nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers: Joseph, John, Andrew, Leo and Paul Strus and three sisters: Catherine Calafut, Anne Shedlock and Helen Mehalco.

The funeral will be Monday at 12:15 PM from the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St., Simpson with The Office of Christian Burial at 12:45 Pm in St. John the Baptist Church, 306 Susquehanna St., Forest City by Monsignor John T. Dorothy  M. Lathrop, 93, formerly of Park St, Carbondale died Monday at the Forest City Nursing Home.  She was the widow of Dwight N. Lathrop, who died in 1982.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Charles & Edna Hoiles Masters.  She was a graduate of Carbondale High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale.

She is survived by a son Charles (Leslie) and his wife Kay Lathrop, Endwell, NY; A daughter in law: Eloise A. Lathrop, Cumming, GA; a sister: Ruth Edwards, Waymart; 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son: Sydney and a brother: Charles Masters.

William F. Ogden

William F OgdenWilliam F. Ogden,87, a resident of the Forest City Nursing Home,. died Thursday after an illness.  His wife of 64 years is the former Dorothy E. Corey.

Born February 29, 1920, in Carbondale he was the son of the late Clarence & Mary Krantz Ogden, he resided in Carbondale his entire life.  He was educated in Carbondale schools and was a graduate of Ben Franklin High School. An Army veteran of WW II, he served in the Philippines and New Guinea as a radio technician.  He was employed by the D. & H., Railroad as a conductor for 38 years and retired in 1980.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale. He served as a member of the Trustee Board and also in the Couples Club. He was a member of Lodge #249 the Free and Accepted Masons and was a member of the United Transportation Union.

He was a tough old guy, who, in spite of disappointments and illnesses in his life, just kept plugging away- the real survivor. He was the one everyone went to when they had a problem and needed advise. He had an amazing memory of people, places and events in his life and loved to tell long stories about them-in detail- to anyone who would listen. He also loved fishing in Canada and hunting on Elk Mountain and will be greatly missed by all of his family.

The family would like to thank Dr. Neal Davis and the staff of the Forest City Nursing Home for their kind and compassionate care.

He is also survived by a son: William F. Ogden Jr and wife Elyse, Dunmore; two daughters : Gloria Shepherd and husband Jack, Sharon, S.C.; Sandra Penzone and husband Robert, Carbondale; nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by two infant daughters: Linda & Marlyn; two sisters: Marie Ogden & Emilie Van Den Houten.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Joseph & Mary A. Krezon Gilliotti. He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and was an Air Force veteran serving during Vietnam

He was a sales representative for Warner-Lambert and was later employed by Farview State Hospital, Waymart.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Simpson and V.F.W. Post # 5544, Jessup. Charles was a Giants fan and collector of Giants memorabilia. He enjoyed his faithful companions Labradors “Magic” & “Clyde” and traveling. He was a caregiver to his mother, who died in October. He will be missed by his family.

He is survived by two sisters: Joyce Linderman, Las Vegas, NV; Carolyn Vogt, Carbondale; a brother: Joseph, Carbondale; nieces & nephews.

Amelia Regina Rusin-Libby

Amelia Regina Rusin-Libby (Amy Jean), 88, of Mt. Lake, Pa died Monday evening at the Mt. View Care Center, Scranton. She was the widow of Alex R. Libby, who died in 1990.

Born in Whites Crossing, she was the daughter of the late Jacob & Joanna Harenza Rusin. She was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson and Marywood College, Scranton. She earned both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education.

She was employed as a teacher by the Maryland Public School system for 30 years.

Beloved by many, Amy is best remembered for her good nature, kindness to others and her love of family.  Her talent in art has left us many painting to treasure.

She is survived by three sons: Michael and his wife Corenthia, Burke, Va; Alan, Mountain Lake; Gregory, Hazelton; a daughter: Joan and her husband Stephen Pauley, Fairfax,Va; three grandchildren: Michelle & Roxanne Libby and Adrienne Pauley; three brothers: Rev. Joseph Rusin, Dickson City Edward, Rochester, Ny; Frank, Carbondale and nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers: James, John  and Ben and three sisters: Anna Rusin, Antoinette Milesko and Mary Unis.

Anastasia  “ Kutch”  Mikulak

Anastasia “ Kutch” Mikulak, 86, of Carbondale died Sunday at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale.  She was the widow of Samuel Mikulak.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Peter & Mary Yacenik Kutch. She was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson.  She was employed in later years by the Carawanna Lunch, Carbondale and was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Basil the Great Orthodox Church, Lord Ave., Simpson. Anastasia was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a very generous person, who helped all.

She is survived by two sons: Michael & his wife Mary Ann, Phoenix, Arz.; Stephen, Harrisburg; two grandsons: Michael & Mark and two great grandchildren: Madison & Alex; two sisters: Stella LeFrancois, Ft. Meyers, FL; Tillie Skasko, Simpson; nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother: Paul and a sister: Anna Armstrong.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc.> 621 Main St., Simpson with a Requiem Service at 9:30 Am in St. Basil the Great Orthodox Church by the Rev. Michael Demko. Interment in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Simpson.

Joseph P. Mark

Joseph P MarkJoseph P. “Jiggs” Mark, 60 of Carbondale died Thursday at the Asera Care Hospice Unit of Mid Valley Hospital, Peckville. His wife, is the former Linda R. Pierce. The couple had been married for 29 years.

Born in Carbondale, he is the son of Philip & Marion Malefsky Mark of Simpson.

He was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. He served as a Marine during the Viet Nam War. He was employed by the former Cross Engineering Co., Carbondale prior to his disability.

He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale and the Disabled American Veterans where he was a Bronze Leader in the Commander’s Club.

Joe was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and “pop pop” who will be deeply missed. He enjoyed his first and only granddaughter, she was the apple of his eye. He lived by the motto: “once a Marine, always a Marine”.

Also surviving are a daughter Holly and her husband Michael Hull, Carbondale and his granddaughter Ava Jo Hull. Eight sisters and their husbands: Marion & Richard Dombroski, Tunhannock; Margaret & Richard Bonacci, Norcross, Ga; Betty Ann & Joseph Penzone, Peckville; Theresa & Kevin Chubb, Carbondale; Carol Histed, Honesdale; Patty & Joseph Kandrot, Carbondale, Loretta & Russ Cowher, Carbondale; Debbie & Rod Brown, Clarks Summit, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be Monday from the Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St, Simpson with Mass at 9:30 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, to be celebrated by Senior Priest Rev. William Campbell. Interment with Military Services in Clifford Valley Cemetery, Clifford.

Elizabeth D. Zurine

Elizabeth D. Zurine, 89, formerly of Simpson died Thursday, on her 89th birthday at Osprey Ridge Healthcare Center, Carbondale.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late George & Mary Risboskin Zurine.

She was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson and was a homemaker. Betty was an assistant to her brother in law a former Fell Township Tax Collector.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Simpson and was previously active in the choir as a vocalist and pianist. She enjoyed stamp collecting and was a great inspiration to her nieces & nephews.

She is survived by a brother: Andrew Zurine, Simpson; nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by four brothers: John, Joseph, George Jr. and Michael and three sisters Mary & Anna Zurine and Catherine Sisko.

The funeral will be Monday from the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc 621 Main St, Simpson with Mass at 9:30 Am in St. Michael’s Church, 46 Midland St, by the Rev. Hilary L. Malinowski. Interment in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.

Eleanor  Williams

Eleanor WilliamsEleanor Williams, 89, of Williamsport and formerly of Newton Lake & Carbondale died Thursday.  She was the widow of Derwood Williams, who died in 1992.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Leon & Mae Davis Breese. She was a homemaker and in earlier years was employed by the J.C. Penney Co., Carbondale.

She was a member of the Berean Baptist Church, Carbondale and was active in church functions including the Beacon Class, Women’s Class and the former Delphic Society.

Eleanor was a loving mother and grandmother, who enjoyed reading especially the Bible. She also enjoyed the wildlife from her apartment in Williamsport.

She is survived by a daughter Charlene and her husband Fred Chubb, Williamsport; A son James and his wife Eileen, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren: Karen & Jeff Chubb, Lynn Williams, four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister: Maybert.

The funeral will be Sunday in the Oliver R Shifler Funeral Home, Inc

Martha Jurble

Martha Jurble, 83, of Simpson died Thursday night at Osprey Ridge Healthcare Center, Carbondale.

Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Alex & Olga Nestrick Jurble. She attended Fell High School, Simpson. She was employed over the years by Picitiny Arsenal, NJ; General Textile, Simpson and several local dress factories.

She was a member of S.S. Peter & Paul Greek Catholic Church, Simpson.
She is survived by several nieces & nephews including Robert Jurble with whom she resided.

She was preceded in death by two brothers: Metro & Robert Jurble and three sisters: Ann Kline, Mae Meriwether and Christine Yascinovich.

Joseph J SefchickJoseph J. Sefchick, 72, of Prompton died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. His wife is the former Roberta H. Para. The couple had been married for 46 years.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late Frank & Antoinette Brezgowski Sefchick. He was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson and the Scranton State General Hospital School of Radiology. He was employed most of his career at Wayne Memorial Hospital Radiology Department.  He served in the Air Force in the 1960’s.

Joe was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also played baseball with the Whites Crossing Team.  He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Radiological Society.

He is survived by a son Joseph and his wife Kathleen Sefchick, South Riding, VA; three daughters: Maria and her husband Jeffrey Hughes, Harrisburg; Kathleen and her husband Cedric Dixon, Winslow Township, NJ; Eileen Sefchick and her fiancée Jeffery Buccellato, Alameda, CA.; two sisters: Genevieve Roloff, Long Island, NY; Helen Gorel, Whites Crossing; six grandchildren: Jack & Ryan Sefchick, Joshua, Jessica, Matthew & Melissa Hughes, nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Frank and a sister: Mary Rupp.

Metro M ZukMetro M. Zuk, 88, of RD#1, Forest City died Sunday at the Carbondale Nursing Home. His wife, the former Mary Ann Pasavage died in 1984.

Born in Waterbury, CT; he was the son of the late Metro & Mary Witko Zuk. He was a graduate of Carbondale High School. He spent many years on the family farm near Clifford which he later operated. He was also employed by General Motors, Buffalo, NY in his earlier years and had been employed by the Endicott- Johnson Shoe Co., Forest City for over 21 years.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church, Jermyn.

He is survived by a sister: Nina Jubinsky, Jermyn and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother: George.

The funeral will be Thursday with a Requiem service at 11:00 AM in St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church, Dundaff by the Very Rev. John Kowalchick, Pastor of St. Michael’s Church & the Rev. Dennis Swencki, Pastor of St. John’s Church. Interment in St. John’s Cemetery, Dundaff.

John Barna

John BarnaJohn Barna, 82, of Simpson died Friday at the Carbondale Nursing Home. His wife is the former Helen Retchko. The couple had been married for 58 years.

Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late Theodore & Veronica Kutch Barna. He was a graduate of Fell High School and in 1972 received a Bachelors’ of Science Degree in Business from the University of Scranton.

He was employed as a dining room captain at Grossinger’s Hotel, Liberty, New york. He was later a district manager for the Pennsylvania Lottery.

John was very active in civic affairs serving with the Fell Township Board of Education, the formation of the Carbondale Area Board of Education and also was a member of the Northeast Educational Intermediate Unit Board.

John was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren, golfing, watching basketball and the lottery.

Also surviving are two daughters and their husbands: Kathy & Dennis Inverso, West Chester; Diane & Kevin Colgan, Carbondale; a brother Peter, Point Lookout, NY; Two sisters: Jean Kloptoski, Simpson; Elizabeth Pickell, Carlsbad, CA; four grandchildren: Laura & Allyson Inverso, Rebecca Cantrell and Matthew Colgan; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Basil, Michael & Stephen; six sisters: June Barna, Ann & Catherine Zielinski, Mary Stang, Helen Bernich and Justine Sabina.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:30 AM in the Joseph w Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc  621 Main St, Simpson with a Requiem service by the Very Rev. Archpriest David Hritcko, pastor of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, Simpson.  Entombment in Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.

Nellie M. Wodnicki, 87, formerly of Mayfield died Tuesday at the home of her daughter and son in law: Lorraine & Jerry Rusek, Greenfield Township. She was the widow of John Wodnicki, who died in 1992.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph & Rose Paluch Jaskowiec. She attended Mayfield Schools and had been employed by several local dress factories prior to her retirement.

She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Mayfield and a member of the Altar & Rosary Society.  She was a loving mother, grandmother & great grandmother who was devoted to her church and enjoyed traveling & quilting.

She is additionally survived by a son: Edward, West Pittston; 2 grandchildren 7 their spouces: Cynthia & Donald Harvey, Jerry & Diane Rusek,Jr; 2 great grandchildren: Jey & Camdyn Rusek, nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son: Carl, a brother: Anthony & a great granddaughter: Madison Suzanne Rusek.

Antoinette R. “Jean” Jaczynski

Antoinette R Jean JaczynskiAntoinette R. “Jean” Jaczynski, 90, of Whites Crossing, Carbondale Township died Thursday at home.  She resided with her daughter and loving caregiver, Ruth. She was the widow of John “Patchie” Jaczynski, who died in 1996.

Born in Whites Crossing, she was the daughter of the late Joseph & Catherine Calafut Rushen. She was proprietor along with her husband of Patchie’s Sweet Shop, Whites Crossing for more than 50 years.  Jean was a homemaker and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was an excellent baker, cook and her family loved and looked forward to all her Polish foods.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.

Surviving are a son: Jack and wife Barbara Jaczynski, Whites Crossing; two additional daughters: Alice Prawdzik, Whites Crossing and Linda Jaczynski, Norristown; a sister: Helen Costolnick, Carbondale; seven grandchildren: Laura & Kelly Jaczynski; E.J. and wife Amanda Prawdzik, Carbondale, Brenda and husband Edward Sokoloski, Archbald, Thomas Prawdzik, Whites Crossing; Jon and wife Theresa Prawdzik, Clarks Summit; Tracy Prawdzik and fiancé Andy Basil, Winter Haven, Florida.  Seven great grandchildren: Aricka, Casie, Timmy and Kaiden Jon Prawdzik and Kristen, Leah and Bryce Sokoloski, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be Monday at 10:00 AM in St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale to be celebrated by Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn. Interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Simpson. Born in Forest City, She was the daughter of the late John & Anna Gribauskas. She was a graduate of Forest City High School. She was a homemaker and along with her husband owned Scotchlas Service Station, Simpson.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Helen was a loving mother who enjoyed traveling with her family.

She is survived by three daughters: Ann Marie Baggetta, Forest City; Kathleen Donovan, South Attleboro, Ma; Diane Highbloom, Wayne, Pa; 5 grandchildren: Nicodemo Baggetta, Kelly & Courtney Donovan, Jordan & Jacqueline Highbloom; a brother: Benjamin Banonus, Simpson, nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by 5 brothers: Frank & Joseph Banonus, Al, John & Charles Gribauskas and three sisters: Betty Banonus, Ann Gribauskas, Mary Franks.
